About Martha
Jim and I have been serving with Cadence International since 2002. We have staffed hospitality houses in both Germany and Italy and have been at the Lighthouse in Yokosuka, Japan since June 2008. My most visible responsibility includes planning, preparing and serving meals for the Lighthouse ministry meetings. I also report Lighthouse financial expenses and income to our headquarters on a monthly basis. I have primary oversight of the ministry to women at the Lighthouse including one-to-one or small group discipleship programs for women.
I came to know Christ as my Lord and Savior in college and Jim and I married shortly after that time. Our five children are grown – and are raising families of their own now. Since we raised our children in the midst of hospitality in our home in Michigan – frequently hosting home Bible studies – when some of our children first heard about Cadence International while studying at Moody Bible Institute they encouraged us to investigate the opportunity to serve in this ministry. We now enjoy the priviledge of being temporary “substitute” parents or grand parents to families in the military community through opening our home and our hearts to them all.
About Jim Bowden
I became a Christian as a child, and when I was 16 years old I was compelled to explore the truths of scripture for myself and see how I felt they stacked up. After much reading and studying I felt very comfortable with what I had been taught by my parents.
Martha and I were married in 1974 and have owned our own business, which we closed down when we came to Yokosuka, Japan, to be the directors of the Lighthouse.
We began serving with Cadence International as full time intermittent missionaries in 2002 and in June of 2008 we came to the Lighthouse as full time missionaries. My duties include directing the Lighthouse staff as well as overseeing the spiritual direction of the Lighthouse. One-on-one discipleship is a primary focus of the Lighthouse. I teach during our Friday night Worship Service. I am also a member of the Department of Education in the Japanese prison where twice a month I go to teach religious education to the American inmates.
