Cadence Charismatic Policy

Approved Nov 2007

Basic Presuppositions:

1.    While Cadence International is not an organization with a history in the Charismatic or Pentecostal traditions and movements, we deeply value and promote the work and wonder of the Holy Spirit and the role of the spiritual gifts in the body.
2.    While membership in Cadence is governed by the guidelines in this policy, ministry alongside those in the military community of other practices and perspectives is strongly endorsed as essential to the advancement of the kingdom of God.
3.    Recognizing the pluralistic nature of the military community, Cadence members show sensitivity and respect to those of other theological persuasions.  In this setting, we work as closely as possible with fellow-believers and yet also clearly maintain our theological distinctives and convictions.

Biblical Principles:

1.    The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a one-time experience at conversion, while the filling of the Holy Spirit is a repeated event in the believer’s life.
2.    Spiritual gifts are sovereignly given by God.
3.    No one spiritual gift is universal.
4.    Spiritual gifts are given for the purposes of the building of the body of Christ and the advancement of the gospel.
5.    The primary evidence of the Spirit’s filling is the fruit of the Spirit in the believer’s life.
6.    The Spirit continues His sovereign and powerful activity in the world today.

Benchmark Parameters:

1.    Concerning the sign gifts (tongues, interpretation of tongues, healing, miracles, and prophecy), Cadence allows into membership those who believe these gifts have permanently ceased. (cessationists) Cadence also allows into membership those who believe that they may still exist today, although not common or normative for all believers. (non-cessationists)
2.    We believe the manifestation and experience of every spiritual gift is to be carefully and consistently evaluated by biblical truth.
3.    Concerning the sign gifts, Cadence does not allow into membership those who practice the sign gifts as part of their spiritual lives.
4.    Concerning the issue of private prayer language, (whether considered either a manifestation of the sign gifts or an experience of an entirely different nature) Cadence does not allow into membership those who practice a private prayer language.
5.    Should a current member of Cadence begin to practice the sign gifts and/or a private prayer language as part of their spiritual lives, for the sake of the love and unity of the Cadence body as well as the forward movement of the mission vision, their membership in Cadence will not be extended beyond their current term of service, at the very latest.
