Serve as a Hospitality House or Retreat Missionary: Questions

This might be the perfect ministry opportunity for you! Not everyone is suited to run a Hospitality House*, however. Here are a few questions to help you decide if this ministry is a good fit for you:

(If you would like,  you can click here to download these questions in PDF format for printing.)

Hospitality and Home Life
➢    Do you enjoy having people in your home? Do you already invite people into your home?
➢    Do they feel cared for and ministered to when in your home?
➢    Do you enjoy meeting new people and taking the initiative to get to know them?
➢    If you have children in your home, can you minister to others AND protect and nurture your kids?
➢    Can you have other children in your home, preparing for ways for them to be ministered to as well.

Relational Ministry
➢    Do you listen well?
➢    Do you sense that Christ is working in you and through you as you reach out to others?
➢    When you disciple/counsel/offer advice, do you do so with the strength of truth and the graciousness of love?
➢    Do you minister out of what God is doing presently in your life?
➢    Do others say you are transparent?
➢    Would they say you live with humility?
➢    Do you really believe that Christ works through your weaknesses?
➢    Can you handle a little chaos?

Leadership and Teaching
➢    Can you engage others and invite them into Scripture?
➢    Would your church consider you (your husband) to be an elder?
➢    Would you be able to plan and lead retreats and day trips?
➢    Do you value unity? teamwork? sacrifice?

Diversity
➢    Do you want to work with diverse people? (Military people are a cross-section of America.  Some are from the country, some from the suburbs, and some from the inner city.  Think of the racial diversity.  Think of the denominational and religious difference – Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Pentocostal, Catholic, conservative/liberal, religious cults, or more often than not, a strange blend or lack of any formal religious background at all!)
➢    Can you work with chaplains from different denominations?
➢    Can you handle rejection?

Outlook
➢    Do you have an adventurous or pioneering spirit?
➢    Are you able to maintain a house and a yard, including minor repairs and improvements?  Can you handle a hammer, a lawn mower, and a mop – or find the help you need?
➢    Will you exercise your faith and rely on the Lord to raise financial support for your expenses and salary if needed?
➢    Are you organized enough to stay on top of basic financial accounting and file reports on time?

*Please understand, when we say “not everyone is suited,” we mean “not everyone is a good fit.”  We don’t mean, “not everyone is good enough for us.”  This is a difficult and demanding job that requires a wide variety of interests, experience, and skills/gifts.  However, if you appreciate the list of questions and the values behind the questions describe you, there may be no better place of ministry for you than ministering to military people through a Hospitality House.
