Mike’s introduction to Cadence came in 1995 when he was first deployed to Okinawa with 3rd Battalion 5th Marines. On his second deployment to Okinawa in 1997, he couldn’t wait to return to the Hansen Christian center. It was during these times of deployment that God began to give Mike a heart for ministry. Upon his arrival back home, Mike would tell Lisa all about the Hansen Christian Center and how much it meant to him to have not only Christian fellowship and instruction, but a home away from home. It was a place where he felt welcomed and a retreat from the daily rigors of Marine life. As Mike would talk about the hospitality house and how it filled a need, Lisa was struck with a desire to “help out” at the house should the opportunity ever present itself. The opportunity came when Mike received orders to Okinawa for the third time in January of 2003, this time for an accompanied tour. Shortly after arriving on island, they found a Cadence hospitality house (The Harbor) not more than three miles from their front door! They found the Harbor to be a very welcoming environment and a place where they were encouraged to do ministry. It was here where they heard the call to become part of the Cadence family. Mike and Lisa’s hearts have never strayed far from the Marines and Sailors at Camp Hansen and so when the opportunity arose to move there they were overjoyed. 

Our Timeline: 

September of 1984 - Mike and Lisa were married
May of 1987 - Their wonderful daughter Jessica was born
May of 2006 - Mike retired from the Marine Corps after 24 years
October of 2006 -  Renovations of the Hansen Christian Center were completed 
August of 2007 -  Our daughter Jessica married Sergeant Ken Safley
